Things to See and Do

Sleights is ideal for both a coastal and country holiday, situated just four miles from the picturesque Yorkshire coastline. It is also on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors with its rugged landscape. Though quiet, Sleights boasts a fish and chip restaurant/take-away, a renowned local butchers selling quality meats and deli, a bakers and a Spar shop including a Post Office and comprehensive off licence open from 7.00am to 10.00pm each day.

There is public transport to the picturesque town of Whitby with cobbled streets and many eateries including The Magpie which was featured by Rick Stein. There are also a number of trendy bars/bistros for your culinary delight. The Abbey is quite theatrical overlooking the town and can be reached by climbing the famous 199 steps. It takes on an eerie feel during the "Goth weekend" when the town is filled with the theatre of Dracula and classic cars - great to be a spectator.

There is a railway station in Sleights with trains running through the Esk Valley between Whitby and Middlesbrough. Grosmont, only 3.5 miles away is home to the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway where you can board the train and transport yourself back in time, particularly during the "war weekend" in October when you will find the train buzzing with soldiers and nurses from the Second World War - not to be missed, a real experience. Goathland - Heartbeat country is 5 miles away where the sheep on the green wander at will. Sandsend with a pub, two beach side cafes and quality restaurant is only one mile north of Whitby and well worth a visit (you can walk to Sandsend along the beach when the tide is out) and Runswick Bay is a little further up the coast where you can laze on the beach or sit in the cafe watching the yachts glide across the water. Staithes which is famous for its group of artists is also worth a visit - it holds an arts festival each year with work displayed in the resident's cottages - a good day out.
